Commissioned by the Pandya kings and later expanded by the rulers of Jaffna, these colonnades form the longest temple corridor in India—an architectural pilgrimage in itself. Spiritually, the temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and a cornerstone of the Char Dham pilgrimage. Legend holds that Lord Rama worshipped Shiva here to absolve the sin of slaying Ravana, a Brahmin by birth. The rhythmic repetition of the pillars mirrors the soul’s journey toward liberation—steadfast, symmetrical, and sanctified. It has two shivalings, one small and the other large. Rama wanted a large shivling to atone his sin, so he asked Hanuman to bring the Shivaling from the Himalayas the abode of Lord Shiva, but Hanuman was late in bringing this, so Ram had Sita make a Shivaling which is the smaller one – Whatever the story the Temple is beautiful piece of ancient architecture and the ornate pillars make an outstanding poster to suit any room, bring the presence of Lord Ram to that room.
