King Bhagirath, an ancestor of Lord Rama, performed intense penance to bring the Ganga down to earth to purify the ashes of his ancestors and grant them salvation. The gods agreed, but there was a problem: the Ganga’s descent from the heavens would be so forceful that it could destroy the earth. Lord Shiva intervened. He agreed to catch the mighty river in his matted hair (jata) to break her fall and release her gently to the earth. And so the Ganga flowed through Shiva’s locks and then down to the earth, making her both divine and accessible to humans.
