In Vrindavan, flowed a mighty river called the Yamuna. One day, this river became polluted due to a fierce multi-hooded serpent called Kalia, whose venom turned the waters black and poisonous. Birds would fall dead and animals terrified.
One day Krishna spotted Kalia, climbed up a Kadamba tree and leapt into the toxic waters. Kalia rose up, furious at the intrusion, and wrapped his coils around Krishna, trying to crush him. But Krishna remained calm. He began to grow in size, and soon, he freed himself and jumped onto Kalia’s heads and started dancing on them. Every time one head rose, Krishna would leap and stomp it down with his lotus feet, performing a cosmic dance. The more Kalia struggled, the more ferociously Krishna danced, until the serpent was weakened and bleeding. Unable to withstand the pain, Kalia surrendered. His wives came and begged Krishna to spare him. Touched by their prayers, Krishna showed mercy. and asked Kalia to leave the Yamuna River and go back to the ocean, the Yamuna’s waters once again turned pure the trees flourished, and the birds returned. All of Vrindavan rejoiced.
