Canvas Print vs Giclee Print

In this post, we take a look at the difference between canvas prints and fine art giclee prints, and see how each one can add its own unique touch to your home or office.

First, let’s start by looking at each type of print separately. Then, we’ll compare the two.

Fine Art Giclees are printed on white, premium, cotton rag paper with high-quality pigment inks. The paper used is a heavy weight enhanced matte, with a white border around the artwork for framing.

Canvas prints are printed on canvas fabric made specialty fibres such as and hemp and jute canvas fabric. Canvas prints look similar to oil and acrylic paintings because their surface has the same texture.

Both fine art giclee and canvas prints have the sharpest detail and highest resolution, displaying the full-color spectrum. Both capture every shade of the original work. Besides being printed with pigment inks, both are very resistant to fading and yellowing.

The main difference between an art print and a canvas print is the surface used for the print. An fine art giclee print uses paper and a canvas print uses canvas as the print surface.

An art print giclee will be thinner and have less texture than a canvas print and looks better framed.  A gallery wrapped canvas print, where the canvas is wrapped on a wooden frame with mirror image printed on the sides to continue the image on the wrap as offered at Posters Photography will look great framed or unframed.

One type of print is not better than the other, but if you have trouble deciding whether or not you want a canvas print or an art print, here are a few things to keep in mind…

 Giclee Print or Canvas Print?

Fine Art giclee prints are a great choice no matter the subject of the photo. A fine Art Giclee as a print or framed as offered at Posters Photography is perfect for Hindu God images, Animals and Birds, Black and White and Stone sculptures, as it brings out the fine detail and the colour spectrum in the artwork. Whereas Canvas prints look great with landscapes, flowers, nature, sunsets, sunrises and paintings

So, if you’re unsure whether you should choose a canvas print or an art print, you can’t go wrong with a framed print. A frame will give always give it a nice, finished look.

On the other hand, I think that an artistic photograph of a landscape, a building, a sunset or sunrise or nature like flowers can look great on canvas. In most of these cases, the finer details do not seem to be missed at all. The texture of the canvas will make the print look much more like an original piece of art. Canvas prints are great for those of us who are on a tight budget because they usually cost much less than original paintings

Overview: Giclee Print vs Canvas Print

When it comes to wall art, there are a few different types of prints that you might choose from. The two most common types of prints are art prints and canvas prints.

So, what’s the difference between them?

Fine Art prints are made with inks printed on paper, while canvas prints are made with inks printed on canvas fabric. This means that fine art prints typically have a more delicate feel to them, while canvas prints have a more textured feel.

Another difference between the two types of prints is the way they’re framed. Art prints are typically framed in a simple vinyl or wooden frame, while canvas prints are wrapped over wooden frames and displayed framed or unframed. The default frame at Posters Photography is a vinyl frame as it is not affected by termites or humidity.
